RS232 is the ubiquitous asynchronous serial interface that has been around since the late 1960s. At least one 9-pin (DB-9) connector is present on nearly every personal computer. The original 25-pin (DB-25) connector is used on modems, terminals, and printers.

V.35 is a standard for synchronous serial interfaces, commonly employed on wide area networking and telecommunications equipment.

RS449 is a standard for synchronous serial interfaces. The connector is smaller and less expensive than the one use for V.35.

RS530 is a standard for synchronous serial interfaces. Reducing the number of signal pins allows the use of the common and much inexpensive DB-25 connector.
